Every Monday, a new theme begins on the blog, and this week I am looking down — at floor tiles. Often overlooked beneath our feet, tiles can carry an extraordinary visual language: repeating geometries, floral ornaments, worn colours, unexpected combinations, and traces of the places and people that have walked across them. From old patterned ceramics to simple stone and contemporary designs, floors can become compositions in their own right. Throughout the week, I will explore decorative floor tiles.

Dogs have walked beside us for thousands of years, carrying with them an extraordinary language of loyalty, curiosity, mischief and affection. This week, they wander into my images: dogs waiting, dreaming, watching, playing; elegant dogs and scruffy dogs, solemn companions and cheerful troublemakers. Through different colours, textures and visual interpretations, I will explore something of that ancient friendship between humans and dogs — familiar enough to belong to everyday life, yet mysterious enough that we can never quite know what is happening behind those attentive eyes.

 This week’s theme is dedicated to white lions, rare and luminous animals whose pale coats are the result of a natural genetic variation rather than albinism. Native to the Greater Timbavati region of South Africa, they have long carried a powerful symbolic presence, associated with light, courage and the mysteries of the natural world. Their beauty has also made them vulnerable to exploitation and trophy hunting, while conservation efforts work to protect them and restore them to their ancestral landscapes. Throughout this week, I will explore the white lion through different visual interpretations, hoping to capture something of its quiet strength, strangeness and extraordinary beauty.
